CHS administration will present the scheduling process to grade 8 students at CMS during PE classes.

January 13 -February 6

Teachers will begin the course recommendation process by posting course recommendations for each student in Genesis. If a teacher recommends a change in course level (i.e. English A to Honors English) they will discuss this with the student. A student who would like to be considered for a level change should discuss this with their teacher during this time.

The recommendation process is a critical step in our scheduling process. Our teachers thoroughly understand the demonstrated skills and knowledge that result in success in the courses they are recommending.  When evaluating a student for a recommendation, teachers analyze several data points that extend beyond the semester grades to ensure the recommended course is a good fit and provides an appropriate challenge.

Areas that teachers consider are:

  • Assessment grades

  • Student attainment of the skills required for the course being recommended.

  • Student’s ability to apply feedback and demonstrate growth.

  • Student’s ability to meet the pacing requirements of the course.

  • The overall level of support that the student needs and how that translates to the expectations of the recommended level.

Students are asked to self-evaluate their progress in the above areas when considering the recommendations by teachers. Teacher recommendations should not be considered in isolation.  In addition, it is important to look at a proposed schedule holistically by evaluating the overall rigor and expectations of the schedule you wish to pursue.  Factors to consider are workload, extracurricular commitments, and overall ability to keep up with and manage all of the courses you are electing to take. Student well-being should be a significant consideration when developing a schedule. Your assigned counselor will offer consultation during this process.

Course Waiver Window #1

A student may decide to waive into a course level that is above the level recommended. Parents may request a course-level waiver by completing a waiver request form. The decision to waive to a higher level should be made after thoughtful deliberation and discussion. If you would like to proceed with this course waiver request, please note the following waiver guidelines governing this course placement through a waiver:

1. The student must remain in the waived course until the mid-point of the first semester of the school year, regardless of their level of success;

2. If the student still wants to move after the mid-point of the first semester, the change will be made only if seats are available to accommodate the request (more than one change in the student’s schedule may be required); and

3. The grades earned in the waived course will follow the student to the new placement.

4. A disproportionate amount of assistance will not be provided for a student who waives into a higher-level course to ensure the necessary pacing and availability of the teacher for all students.
