Yesterday, our K–2 students “stuffed the bus” with non-perishable food items collected over the past week to support members of our community facing food insecurity. The SDOC school bus made stops at MAS, SBS, and WAS for pick-ups, with a final delivery to the Helping Hands Food Pantry at The Presbyterian Church of Chatham.

A big shout-out to all our K–2 students for their generosity, and a special thank-you to our MAS students for sharing their smiles along the way!

Shout-out to all our K–2 students who are generously donating their unopened, prepackaged lunch items to the Chatham United Methodist Food Pantry! Our elementary students have been collecting perishable items from their school bought lunch such as milk, apple slices, carrots, yogurt and cheese sticks to support community members facing food insecurities. In partnership with the Borough of Chatham and with support from Helping Hands of Chatham, these items are made available at the Chatham United Methodist Church. Dr. Mary Donohue saw the success of this initiative firsthand during her visit to CUMC yesterday.

Way to go, kids—your kindness makes a difference!

The ongoing federal government shutdown continues to cause uncertainty regarding Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and its impact on student nutrition. On October 31, 2025 Governor Murphy signed Executive Order No. 402 which declared a State of Emergency due to suspension of benefits and implemented a statewide effort to ensure food access for residents. To support school district efforts to help meet their communities’ food assistance needs during this time, the Department will continue to keep school districts updated and share state resources as they become available.

The Murphy Administration’s SNAP Shutdown Updates website is regularly updated with the current status of benefits, as well as links to resources for those affected by the Federal suspension. This includes:
- New Jersey Basic Needs Information Hub: Get Food This Week
- NJ211 Hotline Provides Local Resources to Help Residents with Food, Housing, Crisis, and Health
- NJ211 Supplemental Food Resource Locations – Search a list of various supplemental food resources in your area
- New Jersey SNAP homepage
- Office of the Food Security Advocate: SNAP Benefits and Food Assistance
- Community Food Banks of New Jersey
