The SDOC is coming together as one community to recognize and support mental health.
To kick off the month, students and staff are wearing green—the color of mental health awareness—on May 1. 💚
In addition, the exterior of CHS will be illuminated in green as part of the Mental Health Association of New Jersey’s “Light It Up Green” initiative, in collaboration with the Chatham Wellness Committee.
Let’s continue to raise awareness, show support, and remind one another that mental health matters—every day.

The NAMM Foundation has announced its 2026 Best Communities for Music Education honorees and Chatham is on that list! Now in its 27th year, this national recognition celebrates schools and districts that lead the way in providing equitable access to music education for all students.
The NAMM Foundation’s mission is to advance active participation in music-making across the lifespan through scientific research, philanthropic giving, and public service programs. Supported by the music products industry, the foundation works to create more music makers, promote the benefits of music, and ensure access to music learning for all.

Yesterday, Milton Avenue School celebrated Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day as part of Read Across America Week with the theme “Exploring Nature Through Books!” 🌿📚
The Environmental Committee shared some of their families’ favorite fiction and nonfiction books about nature—from hikes and insects to animals and the great outdoors.
Students also shared how books have helped them learn about nature and grow their love of reading. Participants wrote down their favorite titles and proudly signed their names after walking to school!

The cold didn’t stop the students at MAS today! Students bundled up in their winter gear and headed outside to enjoy the snow—creating snow towers, making snow angels, and building snow forts.
Today marked the first meet-up between CMS 8th graders and Milton Avenue preschoolers as they kicked off another year of the cherished CMS–Milton Bridge program. Celebrating its 9th year, the program continues to foster meaningful connections, allowing students of all ages to learn and grow together.

🎶 Milton Avenue School Holiday Concert 2025 🎄
Another morning of musical melodies in the SDOC! 🎶 Our district Winter Concerts continue today as Milton Avenue School’s first and second graders take the stage to showcase their talents and spread holiday cheer!
Yesterday, our K–2 students “stuffed the bus” with non-perishable food items collected over the past week to support members of our community facing food insecurity. The SDOC school bus made stops at MAS, SBS, and WAS for pick-ups, with a final delivery to the Helping Hands Food Pantry at The Presbyterian Church of Chatham.
A big shout-out to all our K–2 students for their generosity, and a special thank-you to our MAS students for sharing their smiles along the way!

Shout-out to all our K–2 students who are generously donating their unopened, prepackaged lunch items to the Chatham United Methodist Food Pantry! Our elementary students have been collecting perishable items from their school bought lunch such as milk, apple slices, carrots, yogurt and cheese sticks to support community members facing food insecurities. In partnership with the Borough of Chatham and with support from Helping Hands of Chatham, these items are made available at the Chatham United Methodist Church. Dr. Mary Donohue saw the success of this initiative firsthand during her visit to CUMC yesterday.

Hip Hip Hooray! Three cheers for Milton Avenue School staff! 💕 Throughout October, they rocked “Pink Out” Fridays and raised over $550 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
Way to go, Mrs. Steigerwald’s Kindergarten class! These festive trick-or-treaters earned top marks in the Positive Behavior Challenge at MAS! 🎃👏
Last week was a busy fall week at MAS! Second graders showed off their skills during Mr. V’s Bike Test, and our preschoolers had a blast exploring the Pumpkin Patch on the playground, thanks to the MAS PTO. 🍂🎃
