About Milton Avenue School
"The Little School that Makes a Big Difference"Milton Avenue School is located in Chatham Borough and is one of three kindergarten through third grade elementary (K-3) schools in the School District of the Chathams. The Milton Avenue School learning community exemplifies the District’s commitment to educational excellence. Its mission is to provide a learning environment that is rich with experiences to enhance the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of the whole child. The school climate is one in which students acquire self-confidence and independence as learners and develop positive attitudes about learning and school.
With a student population of approximately 300 students, the school is also home to the special education PREP program for three and four year olds. The Preschool Readiness and Enrichment Program addresses the needs of classified students who are at risk educationally and who are experiencing significant delays in language, motor development, and/or social or emotional development. The Chatham Inclusion Preschool (ChIP) is also housed at Milton. This program includes both children with special needs and typically developing preschoolers. Resource Center special education classes are also available for classified students in kindergarten through third grade. The school’s Basic Skills program supports students who have not met grade level standards in math or reading.
The comprehensive K-3 instructional program is aligned with the Common Core Standards. Research-based reading and writing programs, a problem solving approach to mathematics, a hands-on science program and the use of technology are elements that contribute to a developmentally appropriate curriculum for young learners. Each classroom is equipped with a SMARTBoard and six netbooks, which offer countless possibilities for instruction and learning. Teachers strive to meet the needs of all students through ongoing assessment and differentiated instruction. Additionally, the District’s commitment to providing a strong related arts curricula includes programs taught by specialists in the areas of vocal music, physical education, health, art, Design and Technology, and library/media. Character education creates a strong foundation for a school-wide atmosphere of acceptance and respect for one another.
Milton teachers are committed to professional growth. They are continually involved in enhancing their professional knowledge and skills by attending conferences and in-district professional development classes and by enrolling in graduate school courses. Staff members also play a key role in the District’s curriculum development and revision process.
Schools of excellence emerge as a result of the collaborative efforts of staff, parents, and community. At Milton Avenue School, parent and community involvement is welcomed and encouraged. Parents in the Milton community continue to be among its greatest resources. The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is an active group that supports the educational program with fundraisers and numerous parent volunteers. The PTO supports the annual Author’s Day, Theme Day, and Field Day, and it organizes Milton’s Reading Club, New Family Picnic, Family Fun Night, and the Art in the Classroom program. Throughout the school year, the PTO also coordinates the After-School Enrichment Program.
A mural at the front entrance to the school welcomes visitors to the little school that makes a big difference. The Milton staff values the opportunity to make a difference in the education of each student in its positive, nurturing environment. The school’s goal is to provide students with an academic program of excellence and to also foster the development of lifelong skills that are necessary to become productive citizens in a global society.
