    Welcome to Media Production! Below you will find some basic information about this course.

    “Media Production” is a ten week cycle for 8th grade students. Throughout the marking period, we will learn to critically read and carefully evaluate the news media. Students in the “Media Production” course will explore, evaluate, and generate news stories in various forms. This course examines hard news, feature writing, opinion pieces and editorial essays as well as podcasts and television news.  After studying journalistic writing traits, students will practice writing articles or scripting audio or video reports for a variety of audiences and purposes. Students will exercise methods for researching and interviewing and apply these skills to final published pieces or presentations. Students will understand how to select a topic, research the topic, and write and publish a feature or opinion/editorial piece. Finally, students will follow the stylistic guidelines of each type of writing and apply the information and skills they have learned throughout the unit to their news reporting.

    Unit 1: Defining Media and its Changes, Understanding Journalistic Ethics and Exploring  the Role of a News Reporter 

    • What is the role of a reporter and how has it changed over time?
    • What makes someone a journalist in the digital age?
    • When reporting the news,what moral code binds reporters/journalists? 
    • What protections are afforded to reporters/journalists under the first amendment?
    • What makes a source of information reliable?
    • What is the  importance of selecting trustworthy sources for information, and how can this be done effectively?


    Unit 2: First Amendment, Freedom of the Press, and Bias in the News

    • How does the language in the first amendment relate to free speech for journalistic expression/news reporting?
    • What is meant by bias in the media?
    • What can/can’t be written/reported? 
    • What could get a journalist into trouble? 
    • How do you know if a journalist is telling you the truth? 
    • How can bias be avoided when reporting the news?


    Unit 3 A: News Reports and Interviews

    • What are the qualities/characteristics of a strong news reporter?
    • How can you develop questions that allow for in depth discussion rather than superficial information when conducting an interview.

    Unit 3B: Scripting for Podcast and Video Production:News Reports, Discussion Podcasts-Evaluate, Strategize, and Goals into Practice

    • How can the 5W’s and H of journalistic writing be transformed for podcasts and video broadcasts?
    • Which characteristics of a news reporter are most needed to create a strong podcast?
    • How do these characteristics differ from those needed for a video broadcast? 
    • How can I structure my podcast and video broadcast to project the characteristics of a strong reporter?


    Unit 4: Broadcast News and Production

    • How do broadcast and printed news differ in purpose, audience, and format?
    • Which purpose, audience, and format will best serve my purposes when creating an original video broadcast?
    • How can I troubleshoot/change my game plan when navigating the world of technology (ie. video equipment, websites, WeVideo,etc)?

    This class is designed so that our study and practice of media production will occur during our class time. Most work will be completed within the time of a class period each day. Students may decide to work on projects from home, if we feel more time is needed.
